| The largest farm is Greenway. there are about 400 acres in Thurlbear,
50 in Stoke St. Mary and 38 acres of grazing land at Ham and North Curry.
Mr. Loxton, a farmer from Chilton Cantelo, came to Greenway in 1933: his wife
is a farmer's daughter from North Curry. the farm had been neglected for about
five years before: previously however it had been in the hands of Albion Taylor
and his son Clifford, and it so happens that this family are still the farm
accountants. Mr. Loxton's grandfather used to stay with his uncle, Mr. Gifford,
when he was the tenant of Greenway. in Mr. Taylor's day there were 14 horses
on the farm: now there are 4 tractors. Seven men are employed on the farm,
one having come to the neighbourhood as an evacuee. The shepherd lives at
Gadbridge: most of the other workers live in the cottages next Greenway built
on the site of Mark Dight's Pound Cottage, Mr. Hawkes, the Sexton, living
in the oldest. One worker comes out daily from Taunton. Source: A History of Thurlbear. R. A. Sixsmith. (1957). |
