The S gable fireplace has step and run out stops to plain chamfer on a wooden lintel; to the L is an oven, to the R is a copper - 'furnace' in Somerset. A cider press remains in the centre room which has an ovolo moulded wooden framed door with scroll stops on the R side. (Another room is thought to have been a cider cellar for the storage of barrells). Stairs within the centre room are entered by a heightened door. At the partition attic spiral stairs have some details as the lower ones; A strange curvature in the partition is not understood unless it was associated with an apple shoot to the press room from an apple loft in the N room, where on the E side is an external door, the only direct access for bringing anything in. The attic of unknown function, has two windows. The mixture of joints is most peculiar and queen post trusses are rare in Somerset; equally peculiar is why the trusses were sited between the ceiling beams involving extra timber and labour. |
