History of Haydon House Farm.
Haydon Farm Outbuilding TRD Report 1982. (now called The Granary).
A two storey brick building with exceptionally decorative features on the N gable and W side. Roof has high coned gables and was thatched but is now tiled. Walls are of 19" brick of pale blackish red in irregular bond with a tendency towards Flemish in patches. On the W side between an upper 'dog-toothed' stringcourse, typical of the 17th century and a plain lower stringcourse, windows are set in shallow recesses and have arched lintels with 'keystones'; ground floor doorways are similar. Baking/brewing and and cider making/storage were clearly its main functions but the limited access to the first floor and attic are inconsistent with these and their function is not clear.
The S gable fireplace has step and run out stops to plain chamfer on a wooden lintel; to the L is an oven, to the R is a copper - 'furnace' in Somerset. A cider press remains in the centre room which has an ovolo moulded wooden framed door with scroll stops on the R side. (Another room is thought to have been a cider cellar for the storage of barrells). Stairs within the centre room are entered by a heightened door. At the partition attic spiral stairs have some details as the lower ones; A strange curvature in the partition is not understood unless it was associated with an apple shoot to the press room from an apple loft in the N room, where on the E side is an external door, the only direct access for bringing anything in. The attic of unknown function, has two windows. The mixture of joints is most peculiar and queen post trusses are rare in Somerset; equally peculiar is why the trusses were sited between the ceiling beams involving extra timber and labour.
