Mr and Mrs Callow have farmed 'Netherclay', which used to be called 'Mullins', since 1938. They took it over from Mr Edmund Aplin, whose brother Albert was Mr Callow's great uncle. Mrs Callow is a farmer's daughter from North Petherton. It is a farm of 136 acres, 46 being in Shoreditch and 76 in Thurlbear except two fields over the stream which are in Orchard Portman. Fourteen acres in Orchard Portman belong to the Forestry Commission: the rest are rented from the Crown. One son works on the farm and two full-time men are employed, one living in the cottage opposite Marsh Bay and the other at Stoke St. Mary.

Nearby to Netherclay Farm is situated numbers 188 and 189 Netherclay, two cottages which probably formed part of the original Netherclay Hamlet.
