Orchard Portman School

The School window memorial in the Baptistery of St Michael's Orchard Portman, commemorates Orchard Portman House School, established in 1945 and upon retirement of its Headmaster, Mr R C H Walker, closed in 1976. The school was independently run and educated local and overseas children to A Level standard. The School Window memorial is unique in that it is the only one of its type installed in a Somerset church and according to current research, probably in the British Isles. The Window Memorial was installed on 12th June 1988 by St. Michael's Church Committee and paid for by donations from ex-pupils and staff.

Except for Scheduled Services access to the church of St. Michael and the church itself sadly remains under lock and key. However it is now possible for Old Portmanians to gain access (by a recently reached legal agreement in 2001) to St. Michaels. A key is obtainable from the Matron of the Orchard Portman Nursing Home. A Record Book is maintained by the Matron showing dates whenever the arrangement is used.
