The Portman Arms, magnificently carved and painted during the 17th century and now preserved at Poundisford Park. The arms probably formed part of a chimney-piece at Orchard House, and stress the family's medieval ancestry. The fleur-de-lis of the Portmans and the three pears of the de Orchards are quartered with the arms of Crosse, Maningford, Trivett and Gilbert. The red hand of O'Neil is the distinguishing mark of the baronetcy held by the family from 1611 to 1690. Source: Orchard and the Portmans by T. W. Mayberry, 1986 |
