The villages of
Stoke St. Mary, Thurlbear and Orchard Portman, Somerset, England.

Sir William Portman (c.1498-1557),
appointed Chief Justice in 1555.
The portrait has long been in the
Portman family but is unlikely
to be contemporary with the man it depicts.
It was probably painted as the homage
of a later generation to the founder
of the family's prosperity.
