The villages of
Stoke St. Mary, Thurlbear and Orchard Portman, Somerset, England.

Sir William Portman, 6th Bt. (1644-1690),
Scarcely a year old when his father
Sir William Portman, 5th Bt. (1608-1645)
was committed to the Tower of London
where he died 'a prisoner of loyalty'.
The brief but remarkable life of the
6th baronet saw the Portmans flourish as
never before. At the coronation of Charles 11
in 1661, Sir William, aged only 16,
was made a Knight of the Bath.
