History of the Senior Citizens Club

The Over 60's Club was started by Mrs. Anne Garland on 6th June 1964 with 20 members. Year round meetings have continued to take place in the Village Hall at Stoke St. Mary, every other Tuesday and there are 81 subscribing members in the year 2001. Activities include visiting speakers and entertainers, visits to places of interest and Club holidays. The Stoke St Mary Concert Party made up of Club members, provided the early musical qualities of Club members and concerts were arranged and organised for some years by Mrs Betty Parsons and Mrs Ina Payne - (see Senior Citizens Picture Gallery). The early 1990's witnessed the emergence of the Club's present Musical Group - The Melody Makers - also made up from members of the club. The Melody Makers entertain at Residential and Nursing Homes and other Senior Citizen Clubs in addition to entertaining their own members.
The Club is affiliated to the Chestnut Tree Club in Taunton which was formed in 1965. The Stoke St. Mary Over 60's Club name was changed during the 1980's to The United Senior Citizens Club and members may now join from the age of 55.
