Stoke St. Mary. The 15th Century Font. From a Water-Colour
by S. G. Tovey. (1846). The font apparently stands in the blocked south doorway
of the nave (see south-east view). A box pew is seen here, together with the hat
pegs for the adjoining box. The fittings of the church today date from the
restoration of 1864. (Source: Dennis Parsons, March 2001). The reverse of this photograph of the water-colour by J. Buckler contains notes by Tom Mayberry of 20th December 1975 indicating that the water-colours of the church by (1) J. Buckler (1837) South-East view; (2) S. G. Tovey, (1846) Font; (3) S. G. Tovey, (1846) North-East view; and (4) W. W. Weatley, (c.1840) South-East view, together, form part of The Piggot and Brakenridge Collection at Taunton Castle, and that the negatives from which these photographs are taken belong to The University of London, Courtald Institute of Art. Photographs of the paintings (1) (2) and (4) above can be viewed on the first line of the thumbnail gallery at the St. Mary's Church gallery link at this web-site. |
